Abstract

In this article we do some studies to find “The Sweet Spot” of the baseball. We locate “The Sweet Spot” and confirm the effect of “corking” and the material of the pat on it.

Question 1: First, we work out the bat’s external characteristics and geometric figure, and we get a quantitative description .Then we find out the physical laws basing on the way of hitting ball. We use conservation of momentum theorem, theorem of conservation of angular momentum and rigid body dynamic model built by coefficient of restitution to deduce velocity expression after hit. Substituting data into the expression, we get the exact location of “The Sweet Spot”.

Question 2: After being filled, the physical properties of the pat have changed. Considering about the change of pat’s mass, centroid and moment of inertia, we analyze the effect on hitting caused by “corking”, and we come to a conclusion that “corking” will slow down the ball.

Question 3: In this question, we take different materials which will change pat’s physical properties into consideration. We have focuses on analyzing the effect of moment of inertia and coefficient of restitution’s difference. And we can see that aluminum bat can improve significantly the effect of hitting. Using aluminum pat will lead people to the wrong region of equipment competition. So it is reasonable to prohibit metal bats.

Restatement of the problem

All of us have watched the baseball game! If you have played it, you will find that there is an especial spot where you can hit a higher and farther ball. Every hitter knows that there is a spot on the fat part of a baseball bat where maximum power is transferred to the ball when hit. Why is not this spot at the end of the bat? A simple explanation based on torque might seem to identify the end of the bat as the sweet spot, but this is known to be empirically incorrect. Here we will develop a model to deal with the problem and explain that empirical finding!
