Negative Transfer in Learning a Second Language

Language transfer is a universal phenomenon in second language acquisition. Before language learners learn a foreign language, especially adults, they have been using their mother language to communicate with each other for a long time. So they have been very familiar with the rules of mother language. While they are learning a foreign language, they maybe transfer the roles to the new language unconsciously, and that s what we called L1 transfer. Because of many differences between languages, there are usually more disadvantages than advantages, and we will discuss how the negative transfer influent second language acquisition following and give some practical suggestions of the right treatment to it.

There are a lot of manifestations of negative to influent the second language acquisition. First of all, most of foreign language learners like to learn foreign language with the help of mother tongue, and it would prevent us to have a more standard accent. Like our Chinese, people like to learn English with the help of Chinese “Pinyin” because there are some similarities between them. For example, the first time Chinese learn the pronunciation “I” with the Pinyin “ai”, and they will ignore the prolonged sound and the shorts sound, maybe it s no problem to pronounce just a simply word, but if a long sentence, its substandard pronunciation will
