那么，飞碟来的时候你正在做什么？

这是一个含有时间状语的主从复合句，主句为what were you doing ，它是过去进行时的特殊疑问句。过去进行时表示在过去某一个时刻或某个时间正在进行或发生的动作，由“主语+be ( was/were) + v.-ing形式”构成。

现以动词work 为例，其肯定式、否定式和疑问式如下：

肯定式：I/ He/ She/ It was working.

We/ You/ They were working.

否定式：I/ He/ She/ It was not working.

We/ You/ They were not working.

疑问式和简略回答：

Was I working? Were you working? Was he/ she/ it working?

Yes, you were. Yes, I was. Yes, he/ she/ it was.

No, you were not. No, I wasn’t .No, he/ she/ it wasn’t.

Were we/ you/ they working.

Yes, you/ we/ they were.

No, you/ we/ they weren’t.

表示过去进行时的时间状语有：at that time, this time yesterday, at ten yesterday evening, from eight to twelve yesterday以及when, while引导的时间状语从句。

Eg：It was raining at 6 o’clock this morning.

What were you doing this time last night?

He was sleeping late when the UFO arrived.

两个动作同时发生时，较短的动作可用一般过去时，而较长时间的动作可用过去进行时表示。

Eg：Mum was talking with her friends when Sue entered the room.
