Chinese calligraphy——a unique art

There are a lot of arts in the world today, but the arts that in different countries are always communicating. The Chinese painting and western oil painting, the Chinese folk-dance and Brazilian samba, the Chinese traditional songs and occidental rock and roll... But there is a special case in such a number of communicating arts, Chinese calligraphy.

Nowadays, calligraphy has become the name card of China, and it has been issued in every corner of the world. But what make the Chinese calligraphy become such a unique art?

It’s really a long way for Chinese civilization from just writing to become calligraphy. The Chinese calligraphy has been born since our ancestors wrote Hanzi by writing-brush more than two thousand years ago. At that time, calligraphy just exist as a tool that is used to communicate. In the succeeding dynastic changes, people’s lives became better and better, their thought get further liberation and the need for art kept growing. No TV, no computer, calligraphy became the spiritual ballast without controversy. The calligraphy is not only a tool in order to communicate, but also an unaided art because that it has been mixed by all kinds of emotions and the calligraphy has established the standard of good and bad.

Brush as a writing tool, plays an important role in the road that Chinese calligraphy can develop into an art. The nib of brush is made of animals’ fur. It’s very soft and full of elasticity. That also provides the calligraphy with plasticity so that the calligraphers can express their feeling conveniently with more free exertion. So to speak, unless the brush was invented, the calligraphy won’t become an art easily.

Other countries also have calligraphy. But comparatively speaking, they aren’t the arts at all. It’s measured by it’s beautiful or not, or it’s orderly or not. The writers’ emotion doesn’t blend into every word at all. Also, it is short of dynamic and variation. That makes the Chinese calligraphy stand out in term of writing and become a unique art. Even so, the Chinese calligraphy also has something similar with other arts.

Dancing, maybe it’s one of the most popular arts on the stage. Dancer can express all kinds of emotions by their dancing posture. It’s strong now and then, gentle now and then, and it’s full of freedom. A good calligraphy work also likes dance. When the writer is happy, the work will be lively and flowing. When writer is sad or angry, it’ll be uninhibited. The turning and cadence on the paper just like the beautiful posture of dancers. Mix them up skillfully, it will become a great work.

Singer on the stage often can infect every spectator. The beginning of a song is always gentle like the beginning of a calligraphy work whose mass color is smooch and peaceful. In climax, the singers plough into the songs completely and all kinds of alts convulse the minds. The middle of a calligraphy work is also the most wonderful part that is full of dry brush, turning and change. It interweaves all kinds of emotions.

Chinese calligraphy is an art, a unique art which is mixed by all kinds of artistic quintessence. Calligraphy is our Chinese pride. It’s also the Crystallization of human art. We are supposed to study it piously and protect it carefully.
