Abstract

　　Thepresentstudyisconductedincombinationofinvestigatethe

currentoverallsituationsandthesituationsofintheapplicationofEnglishlearningstrategies(ELSs)J)inChineseruralsettings,andanalyzetheto,aftersix2yearimplementingTheCurriculumStandardsofEducation,andGeneralSeniorMiddleSchools(forshort,TheNewCurriculum).ItsfindingsareexpectedtoprovideempiricaldataandpedagogicalimplicationforpromotingthefurtherreformofEnglishinstructionsthere.Keywords:

1.Introduction

Withtheshiftoftheresearchemphasis,languagelearningstrategies(LLSs),asanimportantbranchofsecondlanguageacquisition,hasbeenaheatedtopicinlanguageteachingandlearning.ManystudiesathomeandabroadidentifythatLLSscanhelptomakelearningeasier,faster,moreenjoyable,moreself2directed,andmoreeffective,andthattheywillalsoenablelearnerstobecomeactive,autonomousandlifelonglearners.Moreover,tocultivatehighschoolstudentsπELSshasbeensetasanimportantobjectivebyTheNewCurriculumStandards(trialversion,2001),whoseoverallobjectiveistodevelopthestudentsπcommunicativeabilities.

AlthoughfruitfulachievementsofstudiesonELSshavebeenmadeinChinasincethe1980s,mostresearchersfocusontheintroductionandreviewofLLSsinthewest,especiallyinNorthAmerica(e1g1Qing1996;Wu1994)orthestudiesonLLSsusedbythestudentsatthetertiarylevel(e1g1Wen&Johnson1997;Li2002;Liu&Wu2000;Wen1996a,1996b;Wu&Liu1993).ItistruethatstudiesonELSsusedbyJMSSsarebeginningtoappealtosomeresearchersandscholars(e1g1Zhou&He2004;Chen2004).However,littleconcernhasbeenshownastoinvestigationofELSsusedbyJMSSsfromChineseruralsettings.Asweknow,of1.3billionpeopleinChina,0.9billionarefarmers,whosechildren,aftertheirprimaryschool,willmostlystudyinjuniormiddleschoolsintownsorvillages.ThepresentstudyisintendedtoinvestigatetheapplicationofELSsemployedbyJMSSsthereaftersix2yearimplementingTheNewCurriculumStandards.ItsfindingsareexpectedtoprovideempiricaldataandpedagogicalimplicationforpromotingthefurtherreformofEnglishinstructionsthere.

2.Literaturereviewandthesignificanceofthepresentstudy
